Interview young promising Chinese car designers_"Made in China" 에서 "Design by China" 로

중국에서 자동차 산업이 호황을 이룸에 따라 여러 재능있는 중국 디자이너들이 전세계의 주목을 받고 있다. 미래가 촉망되는 여러 중국 디자이너 중 PSA 에서 Exterior 디자이너로 일하고 있는 Li Tianyuan, 글로벌 자동차 부품회사인 포레시아 에서 Interior 디자이너로 일하고 있는 Sun Zhaozhi 두 명의 디자이너를 만나보았다.

Li Tianyuan : Southwset Unversity of Science Technology 대학에서 제품디자인으로 졸업한 이후  CH  AUTO 를 거쳐 지금은PSA 상하이 스튜디오에서 일하고 있다. (좌)

Sun Zhaozhi : 영국 컨벤트리 대학교에서 운송수단 Interior 디자인을 전공하고 지금은 고국으로 돌아와 포레시아에서 Interior 디자이너 일하고 있다. (우)

언제부터 자동차 디자인을 시작하셨나요?

L:  자동차 디자이너가 되는것이 오랜 꿈이  었으나 2005년도 처음 대학을 들어갔을때는 제품디자인을 전공으로 선택하였습니다. 여러가지 이유가 있겠지만 가장큰 이유는 중국에 운송디자인이라는 전공이 많지 않았기 때문입니다.  대학교 내에서도 자동차 디자인을 딱히 배워본적은 없습니다. 다만 중국에 있었던 여러 자동차 스튜디오에서 인턴쉽을 진행하며 선배들로 부터 하나하나 배워갔던거 같습니다.

S: 저도 제품디자인을 먼저 전공하였습니다. 디자인이 좋아서 시작했기때문에 굳이 자동차 디자이너가 되겠다는 생각은 없었습니다. 대학교 생활 중 시간이 지나면서 자동차 디자인에 관심이 생겼고 좀 더 공부하고 싶어 영국으로 유학을 떠났습니다. 

자동차 산업이 중국내에서 빠르게 발전하고 있는데요. 이러한 이유 때문이라도 중국디자이너로서 이점을 받으신적이 있다고 생각하시나요 ?

S: 네, 제가 영국에 있을 당시 태국, 인도, 한국 등 세계각국에서 학생들이 자동차 디자인을 공부하기 위해 왔었습니다. 하지만 모두 졸업하고 고국으로 돌아 간 지금, 여전히 많은 친구들은 자동차 디자이너가 되지 못하였다고 들었습니다. 중국내에는 많은 글로벌 OEM Studio 들이 있고 중국 브랜드들도 디자인 스큐디오를 가지고 있기때문에 그들보다는 이득을 조금 보았다고 할 수 있습니다. 중국 내 뿐아니라, 외국에 있는 스튜디오에서도 중국인들은 한 두명 씩 뽑으려 한다고 들었습니다. 그러나 확실한건 중국인이여서만 플러스가 되는 시점은 이미 지났다고 봅니다.

 자국의 디자인 발전을 위해서라도 중국 브랜드로 이직하실 생각은 없으신가요?

L & S:  지금은 계획으로는 현재 회사에서 몇년간은 더 일할 생각입니다. 저는 주니어 디자이너이고  아직까지는 외국계 기업에 배울게 더 많이 있다고 생각합니다. 아마 10년 후 중국 현지 브랜드도 어느정도 성장하고  근무조건도 나아져 있을 때 꼭 한번은 국내 브랜드를 위해 일해 보고 싶습니다. 중국 브랜드가 세계 경쟁에서 살아 남기 위해서는 능력있는 디자이너가 분명필요하다고 생각합니다.

유능한 중국 디자이너들이 언젠가는 자국 브랜드로 이동할 것이라는 사실에는 동의하지만, 더 중요한 문제는 시기있다고 생각한다.  치열한 세계경쟁 속에서 로컬 브랜드가 살아 남기 위해서는 한시라도 빨리 능력있는 자국 디자이너들이 필요하지만 디자이너들은 자국브랜드 들이 일정 수준 이상 성장한 이 후에 옮기길 원하고 있다.     

같은 자동차 디자인 내에 서도 Exterior 와 Interior 디자인은 확연히 다른 듯 보이는데요.  Exterior 디자인과 Interior 디자인의 다른 점은 무엇이고 왜 그 분야를 선택하시게되었나요? 

L: 제가 처음 CH AUTO에서 인턴쉽을 시작하였을 때 이미 자동차 디자인에서 경력을 쌓고 있었던 많은 선배님들이 제가 interior 보다는 exterior 에더 많은 강점을 지니고 있다고 조언해 주셨습니다. 그 이후 부터 exterior디자인을 시작하였고 개인적으로도 interior 보다는 exterior 디자인을 좋아 합니다.    

S:  제가 자동차디자인을 시작했던 근본적인 이유는 단지 자동차가 좋아서가 아니라 디자인이 좋아서 였습니다. 디자인은 미적으로 아름답게 만드는 것에 목적이 있는것 이 아니라,  사람들에게 더 나은 삶은 제공하는데 있다고 봅니다. 이러한 관점으로 본다면 interior 디자인이 exterior 디자인보다 발전실킬 수측면이 더 많기 때문에 interior 디자인을 선택하였습니다.   

Peugeot Urban crossover  

Peugeot 는 이번 2012 베이징 오토쇼에서 파리, 상하이, 상파울로이 위치한 글로벌 스튜디에 의해  디자인된 Urban crossover 를 처음으로 발표하였다. Peugeot Urban crossover의 핵심 디자이너였던 Li Tianyuan  에게 직접 소개를 부탁하였다.

컨셉카의 영감은 동물로 부터 얻었습니다. 예를 들어 rear lamp의 옆모습을 보면 사자의 발톱모양이며 안쪽 3개의 라이팅파이프는 사자의 할큄자국에서 영감을 얻었습니다. 전반적인 페이스 또한 사자의 웃는 얼굴을 반영하여 디자인 하였습니다. Rear lamp 와 headlamp 의 이러한 요소들은 앞으로 Peugeot 디자인 랭귀지로써 계속해서 이어질 예정입니다.

As the industry is booming up, a lot of talented designers in china are getting high recognition from all over the world. Among a few of gifted designers in china, I met two promising Chinese car designers who are working in foreign company which is PSA & Faurecia (one of the largest international automotive parts manufacturer in the world)

Li Tianyuan who graduated from Southwset University of Science Technology in product major and start to worked in CH AUTO until moved to PAS as a exterior designer  

Sun Zhaozhi who studied in Coventry University for master 　　　degree in vehicle interiors and came to China now working for Faurecia as a interior designer

When did you start to design a car?

L: 2005 I went to industrial design department even though I want to be a car designer.  There are several reasons but biggest reason was because there was not enough transportation major in china. I never had class about transportation design in my university. Since there was no class in university I did a couple of internships and learn from actual work and senior designer.  

S: I also had Product design major in my first university. I went to product design major because I like to design and later on I found transportation design is the most interesting part of design for me. So went to UK for further study. 

In common, 10 years ago or even 5 years ago there was not enough transportation design major in China. Most of Chinese design student study by themselves to achieve their dream. But now more and more university offer a transportation design major after the industry got already bigger and start to slow the grow down. They worried that the industry is not bright enough to give opportunity for young Chinese designer as before.

Automotive industry in china is getting bigger and important. For that reason, do you think Chinese designers got advantage?

S: Yes, I had classmate who were from Thailand, India, Korea, and all over the world. But I’m not sure after they went back to their own country they became a car designer or not. But in China, definitely I had better chance to be a car design because of the many global OEM design studio and local car brand studio in China.  Also at one point design studio of global company in oversee they tend to hire more Chinese people than other foreigners. However, the advantage is getting less and less for sure.

Would you like to move to local automotive brand? If you want, when it would be and why?

L & S:  i would like to stay in PAS or other foreign company since I’m still junior designer there are still a lot of thing s to learn from foreign company. But maybe about 10years later, after the local brand also had enough capability and better condition, I would like to move to local brand. I believe my own countries brand needs us to strongly step-up in global competition. 

I agree with the idea that talented designer will start to move to local brand. But the question is when?!  Talented local designer expect to move to Local brand after the brand got certain quality and condition, however the local brand need talented designer to secure their company from drowning.

What is the difference between designing exterior and interior of the car ?

S: Why I get in to automotive design industry is not only because I love car design but also I love design itself. I believe design is not just making things pretty, it is all about make people’s life better. In that point of view interior has a lot of aspects then exterior.

L: I had the first internship in CH AUTO. When I was doing internship, senior people recognized my talent as an exterior designer and also enjoy many aspects of exterior design.   

Peugeot Urban crossover  

Peugeot has introduced this Urban Crossover Concept design by global design studios which are in Paris, Shanghai and São Paulo. In the middle of the action, Li Tianyuan was key designer for the Peugeot Urban crossover.

The inspiration is come from animal—lion, as we can see the profile of rear lamp just like lion paw, the three lighting pipe inside arranged are inspired by scratches. On top of that, the entire front face looks like smiling lion. The concept presents a sculpturing of the wings and side that is very sensual and sophisticated evocative of natural athletic qualities. Lines and surface of the car gives this concept more lively and dynamic character. Many elements and features will be carry over as peugeot"s design langague (like profile of headlamp and rearlamp)
