Competitions: What designers should watch for when taking part in international design award schemes or design competitions - Part 2
By Helmut Langer

International Design Award Schemes (continued):
If the competition conforms to the international guidelines and regulations, and you are thinking of participating, find out the total costs (including any follow-on costs, should you be among the winners, and not forgetting the sometimes not insubstantial postage costs for abroad). Then you think over if these costs are in proper relation to the difficult-to-assess prospects of success (inclusion in the exhibition, annual etc., or receipt of an award or prize)...

O P I N I O N

In the age of consumerism, graphic design has the power to convince consumers to acquire material things they don't really need. However, design can also be used to minimise environmental impact, visual pollution and overconsumption.

As a designer, do you feel you encourage consumerism or minimise consumerism?

Designers entering the job market or changing jobs may find that having a broad range of technical skills, theoretical knowledge and design interests is better than specialising in one or two fields. Is this true?

Generalist or specialist: Which designer will be hired first?

Designers with a broad range of skills will probably find a job first. - 48%
Designers with specialised skills will probably find a job first. - 16%
It doesn't matter - a designer with a good attitude will find a job first! - 39%

Totals shown may be more or less than 100% due to rounding.

EIDD researches accessibility of PDF files to blind readers

How do visual communications impact on blind people? Do graphic designers ignore their needs? Screen readers enable blind people to read texts on their computers, but they have different versions, just like all other software¡¦ and they are not always mutually compatible. EIDD, the European Institute for Design and Disability, is researching the implications of ensuring the accessibility of PDF files - on screen readers, on successive versions of software and on the graphic designers who generate the PDF material for inclusion in websites. If you would like to know more about how to make your PDF and other files truly accessible to everyone, or would like to take part in the developing discussion and construction of knowledge and methods, contact Cearbhall O'Meadhra, who is a blind designer as well as the President of the Irish section of EIDD, at president@idd.ie

'Design(ing) Network(ing)' Exhibition
Garanti Galeri, Istanbul, Turkey
MunevverEm@garanti.com.tr

The designer has become a network navigator. Who becomes a designer, how they practice their profession and what they produce are all now intimately driven by the network. Curated by Tom Klinkowstein, this exhibition features well-known designers of virtual design: Core77, Doors of Perception, Media A, D-Fuze, ESP Trendlab, Urban Probe

Adriena Simotova: Drawings for Texts
Prazak Palace, Brno, Czech Republic
http://www.bienale-brno.cz

Adriena Simotova's illustrations from 1967-2003 concentrate, as does her free art from the period, on existentially formulated issues of the human condition. The artist's approach to illustrations was moulded by her encounter with the poetry of Vladimir Holan. The exhibition is not limited to final illustration products, but allows viewers a glimpse into the artist's creative process. It follows the thread of her communication with the interpreted work and the placing of her visual style into accord with the essence of the illustrated text. Exhibition concept: Pavel Brunclik.
